DADA

dada

After having missed the left them eat cake theme over at sparkapolooza I've made it back for the DADA theme. Having recently been to the National Gallery in Canberra and seen some real DADA I decided to leave the toilet where it was and work from the sound of the word rather than it's artistic meaning.

so far a quiet year for the blog

So far this year has been a bit of a fizzer for the ol' blog. Mostly because I have spent so much time driving the mouse and not enough behind a pencil. Fortunately a couple of projects were realised.

Firstly a cycling jersey I designed for a friend in Canada was produced for the GatiGators triathlon team. With textured skin and yellow eyes it is certainly something different.

How hot is the helmet hair in this pic!

Also a colleagues performance 'click tease' needed a poster for the Adelaide fringe festival, which kept me busy in the lead up.

I even managed to fit in going to Semi-Permanent in Sydney.

Then finally, for easter, headed out of the city for a country break. Below is a quick sketch I put to paper to leave at the farm-stay in Ruffy, and a photo from my vantage point on the hill.

The Ineffable James Garfield

The Ineffable James Garfield has been totally inspired by the Bloggess' coliary posts (It's like losing James Garfield all over again and For the love of James Garfield) following her triumphant purchase of James Garfield and all his awesomeness.

and the treehouse continues to grow

The seed was planted when I posted my original sketch just days ago, now I have taken it though enlargement to colour. It has been a long time since I have even attempted painting with water colours so I was pleasantly surprised when it didn't look like a brown wet blob at the end of it. I'm still not sure if I am finished with the project, but am stoked with where it has gotten to.

Maybe I need a story to put with it or a character who lives there. Food for thought.

All done, for now

Creative Sundays

Sundays usually consist of a bike ride followed by takeaway food, a beer in the backyard. But this weekend, for a change, I was invited by Sophie to a afternoon of creative/crafty arts. Though I didn't stray from my sketch book it was fantastic to be around creative people and talk about our projects. Can't wait to do it again! Also a big thanks to Iris (for hosting) and Fiona for adding to the creative pool.

So, the conversation ended on something like 'thats about as likely as a gorilla wearing a pink tutu, marching around a congo drum, hitting it with rubber snakes'. Strangely the image was still in my head the next day, so it deserved a page in my sketchbook.

I have noticed the theme of wind power popping up in a lot of my scratchings lately. I'm not sure if it is because of the weather here, Carly's wind/water powered building or just a fascination at how much power it actually has, and how different levels can make or break your day.

Life drawing

With a full week behind me I only have these sketches to show from life drawing with Sophie of 'the Monday Project' fame.

The adventures for this week that distracted my sketching time were Fire: a retrospective, friends from Wagga (who left with my alley bike to take on Tour de Rutherglen), a 3 year anniversary and dinner with friends. Hopefully next week at least one night will be spent between the sheets (of my sketchbook).

my box of sun

After starting again and again on this project I kept getting stuck on the descriptive title of this months challenge provided by the Monday Project. 'A box of sun' told the whole story to me and no matter how I tried to bend my head around to something new I decided to develop on the very basic image in my head. Make sure you click on the image to see it larger and read the text on the box.

Thanks again to Kate and Sophie for getting me to finish at least one creative project each month :)

Sketching during meetings

Do you know those times when meeting float off into irrelevant conversation that doesn't apply directly to you. Well I start scribbling. Here's the latest.

More scratchings from the couch

I have been a bit slack on the sketching lately though some nice weather and spare time I have managed to put pencil to paper and get something out.

the first is an early response to the Monday projects theme of brave.
second is due to watching a lot of the tour de france – i think this bloke is a bit Lance Armstrong'ish.
third is a scratching that i did on a nice day in the park. just a mother and daughter enjoying the day. shame i had started another sketch then worked over it.

Life drawing

It has been a while but with a little reminding from a friend I dropped in on another life drawing session at the Sandringham in Newtown. This time with a male model who made some great shapes even if i didn't do the greatest job of capturing them.

The little sketch in the top right of the first picture is of one of the local street people who makes a nuisance of himself by lighting little fires on the street. People were ignoring both the fire and the person as they walked past.

Jumping in puddles

After a long day trapped inside because of the rain little Carly went out to play adorned with wings and halo. Poor old mum was blissfully unaware until her little angel proclaimed her greatness in the centre of the living room.
Thanks to the Monday Project for another great challenge :)
